The [[NES emulation]] community has agreed by necessity to number and name the different hardware [[mappers]] contained in [[NES]] cartridges. Numbering them proved to be inadequate for several reasons, including running out of numbers (256 maximum allowed by the [[iNES format]]). The [[UNIF format]] (Unified ROM format) uses names instead of numbers. Some NES games, especially certain [[multicarts]] from Hong Kong, can not be properly stored in a format that uses mapper numbers and must be stored in a .unif file with a named mapper.
