When this video game was first released back in 1989, it was one of the most popular video games of the year. Little did people know that unlike the 2 TMNT sequels that would be released in the following years, the first TMNT game had a playing style that was less like Super Mario Bros. and a lot more like Legend of Zelda. While older boys could quickly adapt to this type of gameplay through playing Legend of Zelda and/or Final Fantasy, younger boys who were used to playing side-scrolling platform games were disappointed by the sharp learning curve they faced by navigating the overhead view map in order to get to the next side view action scene.
